The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, published in 1850, is a partial biography of the abolitionist, and it is also the earliest account of the life of a female slave. After escaping slavery, Isabella
Narrative of Sojourner Truth
Baumfree changed her name to Sojourner Truth and traveled the country preaching. Though she was illiterate, she dictated her story to her friend, abolitionist Olive Gilbert whom she met in a utopian community in Northampton, Massachusetts. The book recounts her experiences as a northern slave and her spiritual transformation which led her to speak against slavery and inequality across the country. Truth supported herself while speaking and traveling by selling copies of her book.
