The second and most popular of THE LEATHERSTOCKING TALES by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in two volumes in 1826. Its protagonist, Natty Bumppo,
Last of the Mohicans
(or Hawkeye, as he is known in this novel), is in middle life and at the height of his powers. The story, set during the French and Indian War, tells of brutal battles with the Iroquois and their French allies, cruel captures, narrow escapes, and revenge, as Hawkeye and his Mohican friends Uncas and Chingachgook help the daughters of a British commander rejoin their father.
