H.L. Mencken's The American Language attempts to distinguish American English from British English by highlighting uniquely American idioms and expressions. The work, published in 1919, was reissued with additions in 1945 and 1948. The thoroughness and scientific nature of Mencken's study made him one of the leading authorities on the language of this country, and the work continues to be a valuable resource in American linguistics.
