On their journey from 1804-1806, Lewis was the primary record keeper for the journey and recorded the details of their expedition, drawing maps and sketching the animals and plants that the party of over 30 men encountered. Lewis and Clark's diary of the expedition disproved the myth of the Northwest Passage—a way to cross the continent by water—and laid the foundation for western expansion by providing a greater understanding of the frontier.
