Abraham Lincoln delivered the brief Gettysburg address on November 19, 1863, to dedicate the cemetery on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Although Lincoln was careful not to offend or vilify the South—or to address the issue of slavery—he specifically affirmed the Declaration of Independence, and not the Constitution, as the fundamental law of the United States government, which is "of the people, by the people, for the people."
