Ilong with her career as a fiction writer, Edith Wharton was an innovative designer of homes and gardens. In 1902, she began work on The Mount, demonstrating ideas about architecture, gardens, and interior design set out in Wharton's book, The Decoration of Houses (1897). The Mount, located in Lenox, Massachusetts, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
