Montpelier, located in Virginia's Piedmont region, was the home to three generations of Madisons. The National Trust for Historic Preservation opened the property to the public in 1987, on the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. Exhibits at Montpelier focus on Madison's role in developing the Constitution, as well as furniture and decorative arts in the mansion from the 1770s to the 1830s.
