In 1930, William Faulkner bought this large primitive Greek Revival house in Oxford, Mississippi, the town where he spent his boyhood. The name comes from the mythic Rowan tree; a cross made of rowan wood and placed over a threshold was believed to keep away evil spirits and make the house a refuge of peace and privacy. Faulkner wrote some of his best work in this house.
