The Chicago Historical Society is a privately endowed, independent institution devoted to collecting, interpreting, and presenting the multicultural history of Chicago and Illinois, as well as selected areas of American history. It offers exhibitions, programs, research collections, and publications. Theodore Dreiser's novel, Sister Carrie, is partly based in Chicago and deals with the urbanization of America during the early 1900's.
