Walden Pond is located outside of the picturesque town of Concord, which is about 20 miles west of downtown Boston. Henry David Thoreau, who lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847, based his book, Walden, on his experiences here. The land around Walden Pond was once owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson's family, and the family gave it to the state of Massachusetts in a deed of gift. Because of Thoreau's legacy, Walden Pond was designated a National Historic Landmark. Since 1990, The Walden Woods Project has launched a massive effort to preserve Walden Woods.
