Information on Sojourner Truth: Michael Evans, Executive Director, Heritage Battle Creek, 616 965-2613
Where: Map

Sojourner Truth came to Battle Creek around 1856, where she later lived and worked for the Merritts. She later purchased a barn on College Street from Merritt's brother, Richard, which she turned into her home.

The Merritt house is one of the few structures where Truth spent time that is still standing. When Sojourner Truth returned to Battle Creek from her work as an itinerant preacher, abolitionist and voice in the women's movement, she often visited the Merritts to discuss her travels. Sojourner Truth died in 1883 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek. Today, the Merritt House is owned by Dr. Stephen Robinson and is the site of The Historic Northside Family Practice.
