Located on a tributary of the Columbia River, Fort Clatsop is a reconstruction of Lewis and Clark's winter encampment from December 7, 1805 through March 23, 1806. After reaching the Pacific Ocean in late November, 1805 via the Columbia River, the Corps of Discovery needed protection for the winter before retracing their journey back east. Finding a well-protected site about 15 miles from the meeting of the mouth of the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean, they built Fort Clatsop. Significant to their time at the fort was the reworking of the Journals of the Expedition by both Lewis and Clark. Here also, Clark prepared many of the maps which were among the most significant contributions of the expedition.
