James Madison was a delegate to Viriginia's COLONIAL LEGISLATURE before he was a delegate to the CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION in Phildaelphia. He is considered to be the primary architect of the U.S. CONSITUTION.
Timeline
With Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, he wrote THE FEDERALIST PAPERS, a series of papers published anonymously, urging the states to ratify the Constitution. Later, in the U.S. CONGRESS, he pressed for the inclusion of the BILL OF RIGHTS. As the 4th president, he presided over the WAR OF 1812.
