Excerpt from Journals of the Expedition

fter refreshing ourselves, we proceeded on to the top of the dividing ridge, from which I discovered immense ranges of high mountains still to the west of us, with their tops partially covered with snow. I now descended the mountain about 3/4 of a mile, which I found much steeper than on the opposite side, to a handsome bold running creek of cold, clear water. Here I first tasted the water of the great Columbia River.

Teaching Topics in Social Studies
In an expedition funded by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and stewarded by THOMAS JEFFERSON, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the geography of the Northwest Territory and beyond.
Timeline
They had a specific mission- chart routes and create MAPS which would make WESTWARD EXPANSION a reality. They carefully packed supplies that would enable them to survive in the extreme CLIMATES and PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY. They collected information about the NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. NATIVE PEOPLES, including Sacajawea, played an integral role in the success of their journey. While they set out with one set of BIASES, their experiences along the trail surely impacted their POINT OF VIEW.

Teaching Topics in Language Arts
Lewis and Clark, in writing about their expedition, used DESCRIPTIVE WORDS and IMAGERY to detail the LANDSCAPE they encountered.
Scavenger Hunt
How long is the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail?
. . . answer . . .
They used SCIENTIFIC TERMS and other TECHNICAL LANGUAGE. While their journals were intended to be a straightforward description of what they saw, their POINTS OF VIEW can be detected.
